How a will is drafted doesn't decide whether it's valid. What matters is that it's signed and witnessed the way your state's law requires, and some states also allow a notarized self-proving affidavit. Our law pages cite each state's rules, and several services include state-specific signing instructions.
Why is a free service ranked first?
Price is one of seven criteria. FreeWill also scored highly on documents, state coverage and lock-in. Free services are paid for by someone: FreeWill by nonprofits, Do Your Own Will by ads. Our privacy criterion checks that the funder is named plainly.
Do I need a lawyer?
That depends on what you own and your family situation, and we can't advise on it. The "Help when you're stuck" criterion shows which services include a lawyer, and at what price. Our probate lawyers directory lists firms by state.
What about Louisiana?
Louisiana has its own rules for wills, including a notarial form. Some services exclude Louisiana, and the table shows which. Check the service's own page for your state before you start.
Do these companies pay you?
Some pay us if you sign up or buy through our link. Payment never changes who is included or the order. One service may show a labelled sponsored offer above the table, outside the ranking. How we rank (opens in a new tab).
How current are the prices?
Each service shows the date we last checked it. We re-check every month. Prices can change between checks, so the company's own page has the final price.
