HonestFarewell exists so families can see what funeral and cremation cost before they have to decide. That only works if what we publish is correct, traceable to a source and independent. This page explains how we make sure it is.
Where our facts come from
- Prices come from each funeral home's own General Price List, the document the FTC Funeral Rule requires every home to give you. We show each price with the date printed on the list, the date we last checked the list, and a link to it.
- Licenses come from the state funeral boards' own registers.
- Laws come from the statute or regulation itself. Every legal fact carries its citation and the date someone checked it against the text.
- Lawyers are listed only when at least one attorney at the firm is active on the state bar's own roster, or holds a credential from ACTEC, NELF or a state certifying board in states whose bar publishes no roster to check.
We don't use a price we can't trace to its source.
Who writes and reviews
Our guides and articles are written and reviewed by named people, shown on each page with their role and credentials. They work for Honest Reviews Tech LLC, which runs the HonestReviews group of sites. A reviewer checks the facts in a guide before it's published and again when it's updated.
How we keep it current
Prices change. Each price shows the date printed on the funeral home's price list, when the list has one, and the date we last checked that list. Once a week we re-check the price lists we hold, to see whether a home has published a new one. A re-check doesn't make an older list current: when a list is more than two years old, we say so next to its prices. When a funeral home sends us a new price list, we review it and update the listing.
Use of AI
We use several AI models, set up for this work, to read price lists and help draft text. People review and edit what they produce before anything is published, and every price links to the price list it came from.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, we fix it and date the change. Anyone can tell us: a family, a funeral home, a lawyer. See how to correct a price or a listing.
Independence
HonestFarewell isn't owned by a funeral group, a cemetery group or an insurer. Some things on the site can earn us money, and each one is labeled where it appears. No one can pay to move up a list, to change a price, or to have accurate information removed. See how we make money and how listings are ordered.
