This page says how we are paid, where the numbers come from, and what to do when something here is wrong. If any of it stops being true, this page changes first.
How we are paid
HonestFarewell is free to read. There is no account, no form in front of a price, and no email required to see one.
Some of what is on this site can earn us money, and some of it never will.
Links that may pay us. A link to a provider, a product or a service may carry a code that credits us if you click it or buy something. Where that is the case, the money comes from the company, never from you, and the price you pay is the same either way.
Premium listings. Funeral homes and law firms can pay a flat monthly or yearly fee for a fuller, labelled Premium profile. The fee is flat, never charged per call, request or arrangement, and it never changes their place in any list.
Placements that are paid are labelled. A funeral home, a law firm or an insurer can pay to appear in a labelled, visually separate block. They cannot pay to move up a list. The inputs we sort on are published on the page the list appears on, and payment is not one of them.
What we will not take. We do not take a commission on a funeral, a percentage of a legal fee, or a payment that depends on you hiring anyone. We are not a lawyer referral service and we do not match you to an attorney. You choose who to contact, and you contact them yourself. We are not licensed insurance producers, and we do not sell insurance or give personal coverage advice. We currently receive no payment from insurance links. If that changes, every link that pays us will be labelled with exactly what it pays for, and we will never be paid per application, per policy or per sale.
We do not sell your details. Nothing you type here is passed to a provider unless you have chosen that provider and asked us to. Nothing is sent within 72 hours of a death.
We are independent, and not owned by a funeral group, a cemetery group or an insurer.
Where the numbers come from
Funeral prices are taken from each home's own General Price List. We publish the price with the date we read it and a copy of the document it came from, so you can check the number against the source rather than trusting us for it. We do not estimate a price, average one, or fill a gap with a guess: a home with no published price is shown as having none.
Under the FTC Funeral Rule you can ask any funeral home for its General Price List and it must give you one. Ours is a copy of that document, not a substitute for it.
State law is published with the statute it comes from and the date a person checked it. A fact without a source and a named checker does not go on the site.
Lawyers are listed only where an attorney at the firm verifies as active on that state's bar roster, checked against the roster the bar itself publishes. We link the roster so you can repeat the check. A listing is not a recommendation: we do not endorse or recommend any attorney.
Nothing here is advice. Not legal, not financial, not insurance, not medical.
Where we will be wrong
This site holds tens of thousands of prices, across thousands of funeral homes, in fifty states, alongside statutory facts and law firm records. Every one of those numbers was read off a document somebody else wrote, and those documents change without telling us.
So some of this is wrong right now. Not as a possibility, but as arithmetic. At this scale there will be:
- prices that have gone up since the day we read the price list
- a home that has closed, merged or changed hands
- a link that has died, or now points somewhere else entirely
- a name, an address or a phone number recorded wrongly
- a law that changed after the date we checked it
We try to make that survivable rather than pretend it away. Every price and every legal fact carries the date we checked it and a link to where it came from, so a stale number is visible as stale and you can go to the source yourself. We re-check, and we correct. But we cannot promise that a given number is right today, and we do not ask you to take one on trust.
Confirm before you rely on it. Before you spend money or make a decision, confirm the figure with the provider directly. Their current price list governs, not our copy of it.
Telling us something is wrong
If a price, a link, a name or a fact here is wrong, tell us and we will check it against the source and fix it. Corrections are free, and a provider does not have to pay us anything to have their own information corrected.

The rest of the terms
This page covers how we are paid and how far you should trust a number on it. The full terms you agree to by using the site, and what happens to anything you type into it, are set out separately:
Where this page and those two disagree, those two govern.
