The order of a list is a claim about who comes first. Here's exactly how we decide it, so you can check it yourself.
Funeral homes
What we compare. Each price page compares one package (for example, a direct cremation, or a traditional funeral and burial). The items in that package are listed on the page, and every home is priced for the same items, taken from its own General Price List. If a home's list doesn't let us price the whole package, we don't guess.
The order.
- Lowest price for the package first.
- Then distance from the center of the area, when two prices are the same.
- Homes with no published price come last, marked "Call for a quote". They're still listed, never hidden.
You can re-sort a list by distance.
Who is included. A home appears when it serves the area and its license isn't lapsed, suspended or revoked on the state board's register. An area gets its own price page once at least three homes there have a complete published price for the package.
Law firms
Probate and estate firms are listed nearest first. You can re-sort them by how many of their attorneys are on the state bar roster. A firm appears when at least one of its attorneys is active on the state bar's roster, or, in states whose bar publishes no roster, holds an ACTEC, NELF or board certification. A metro page with fewer than three firms can stay live while a law firm sponsors that metro; the firms shown and their order are the same as on any other page. We don't endorse or recommend any attorney, and we never pass your details to a firm.
Sponsored placements
A funeral home or a law firm can pay for a place in the area marked "Sponsored", above or below a list. That area is always labeled and always kept apart from the list. It never changes the order of the list, and a home can't pay to move up, to change its price, or to have a competitor removed.
When a listing is wrong
If a price, a distance or a license looks wrong, tell us and we'll check it against the source.
