Funeral and cremation law in Ohio
Who decides, what has to wait, and what a funeral home must tell you. Every fact links to its statute. Not legal advice.

- Waiting period before cremation
Ohio has unusually detailed cremation rules. A crematory generally cannot perform a cremation until at least 24 hours have elapsed from death, the required burial or burial-transit permit has been received, the cremation authorization form has been completed, and any other required documentation is in place.
- Paperwork before a cremation
Ohio's cremation authorization form identifies the authorizing agent, the identity of the decedent, the recipient of the cremated remains, and the planned final disposition. Ohio also provides rules for unclaimed cremated remains after 60 days.
