Funeral and cremation law in Alaska
Who decides, what has to wait, and what a funeral home must tell you. Every fact links to its statute. Not legal advice.

- Who can authorize a cremation
Alaska treats the right to control disposition as a distinct legal right. A person can make directions in advance and can name someone to carry them out. If the person with priority does not act within 48 hours after receiving notice of death (or within 48 hours after death, whichever is earlier), the right can pass to the next person in line. That makes Alaska one of the states where having your wishes written down - and having the right person know where that document is - can make a real difference. Alaska also prevents a person charged with a felonious killing connected to the death from controlling disposition when the relevant funeral director or cemetery knows about the charge.
