North Carolina rules that apply here
Every line links to its statute. Checked Oct 7, 2026.
- Who can authorize a cremation
- The person with the legal right to decide is not automatically the person who happens to be arranging the funeral. If the person who died left no written instructions, North Carolina law lists who may authorize the type and place of disposition, starting with the surviving spouse, then a majority of adult children. A person can also name someone ahead of time to make this decision. Anyone who does not act within five days of being notified, or 10 days after the death, whichever comes first, is treated as having given up the right. statute →
- Waiting period before cremation
- North Carolina does not allow cremation within 24 hours after the time of death. The wait can be waived in writing by the medical examiner, county health director or attending physician when the death was caused by a listed infectious or communicable disease. statute →
- Naming a disposition agent
- An adult in North Carolina can set the type, place and method of their own disposition in writing, and can hand that decision to any person they choose. The law ranks the ways to do it: a preneed funeral contract or cremation authorization form first, then a health care power of attorney, then a will, then a signed statement witnessed by two adults. A military DD Form 93 delegation takes priority when death occurs in covered military circumstances. statute →
Why these numbers are comparable
A price list is a list of line items, and no two homes itemize the same way. We rebuild the same basket at every home. Medians across the 11 homes with a checked price list:
- Immediate burial (casket provided by purchaser)
- $4,495
- Basket, median items
- $4,495
Anything a home charges outside this basket is shown on its own page, not hidden in the comparison.

Questions families ask
Answers use the figures on this page, not national averages.
Among 11 funeral homes serving Charlotte with a checked price list, immediate burial runs from $2,635 to $5,845, with a median of $4,495. The middle half of these homes charge between $3,370 and $5,235. Each figure comes from that funeral home's own General Price List, and we checked it against that list; the oldest check was Oct 7, 2026 and the most recent was Oct 12, 2026. We list 42 funeral homes serving Charlotte, and 11 of them have a price list we've checked so far.
The total adds these items from each funeral home's price list: immediate burial (casket provided by purchaser). Cemetery or crematory fees charged by third parties, death certificates, and merchandise such as an urn or casket are extra unless a funeral home lists them.
No. Under the federal Funeral Rule (16 CFR Part 453) you have the right to choose only the goods and services you want, and every funeral home must give you an itemized General Price List. The packages here are a comparison aid built from those itemized prices, not something the funeral home sells as a bundle.
The biggest differences are the non-declinable basic services fee, whether the funeral home has its own crematory or uses a third party, and how far it will travel to collect the deceased before a mileage charge applies. Each funeral home's page shows all of these.
