Illinois rules that apply here
Every line links to its statute. Checked Sep 18, 2026.
- Who can authorize a cremation
- Illinois has a specific Disposition of Remains Act. Unless the decedent left effective written directions or appointed an agent, the Act establishes a priority order for who controls disposition, including cremation. statute →
- Scattering ashes
- Illinois gives the authorizing agent responsibility for the final disposition of cremated remains. The statute allows placement in a grave, crypt, or niche and permits scattering in a scattering area or on private property with the owner's consent. Illinois also contains a specific religious-water-scattering exception for certain Illinois rivers, subject to statutory conditions. Illinois updated its cremated-remains provisions with legislation effective in 2026, so older internet summaries can be out of date. statute →
Why these numbers are comparable
A price list is a list of line items, and no two homes itemize the same way. We rebuild the same basket at every home. Medians across the 16 homes with a checked price list:
- Immediate burial (casket provided by purchaser)
- $4,737.50
- Basket, median items
- $4,737.50
Anything a home charges outside this basket is shown on its own page, not hidden in the comparison.

Questions families ask
Answers use the figures on this page, not national averages.
Among 16 funeral homes serving Chicago with a checked price list, immediate burial runs from $3,300 to $6,490, with a median of $4,738. The middle half of these homes charge between $4,065 and $5,313. Each figure comes from that funeral home's own General Price List, and we checked it against that list; the oldest check was Sep 21, 2026 and the most recent was Oct 12, 2026. We list 158 funeral homes serving Chicago, and 16 of them have a price list we've checked so far.
The total adds these items from each funeral home's price list: immediate burial (casket provided by purchaser). Cemetery or crematory fees charged by third parties, death certificates, and merchandise such as an urn or casket are extra unless a funeral home lists them.
No. Under the federal Funeral Rule (16 CFR Part 453) you have the right to choose only the goods and services you want, and every funeral home must give you an itemized General Price List. The packages here are a comparison aid built from those itemized prices, not something the funeral home sells as a bundle.
The biggest differences are the non-declinable basic services fee, whether the funeral home has its own crematory or uses a third party, and how far it will travel to collect the deceased before a mileage charge applies. Each funeral home's page shows all of these.
